After having bariatric surgery, whether it’s malabsorptive (like the DS and Gastric Bypass) or restrictive (like the Gastric Sleeve), there are post-op instructions to follow. Vitamin intake is extremely important for any surgery because you aren’t eating as much or your body isn’t absorbing as many nutrients as it did before. Even without bariatric surgery, food isn’t as nutritious as it once was, and taking supplements will highly benefit your diet.

Here are the rules for taking your vitamins:

  • Take Zinc along with vitamin C
  • Take Iron along with vitamin C

You may take all 3 together early in the morning while fasting. They must be taken on an empty stomach for better absorption, due to the acidic nature of the stomach.

  • Take multivitamins any time of the day
  • Take calcium separate from iron, it is fine at any time of the day.

The reason behind this is that iron and calcium both target the same receptors and calcium overpowers iron, resulting in low absorption of iron.

  • Take B12 and biotin any time of the day.

Some people find that B12 causes insomnia so you may not want to take it at night.

Definitely space them out throughout the day, it is a lot to take all at once. High amounts of vitamins consumed at once can cause nausea, and vomiting, among other things depending on the vitamin.

If you’ve had a Gastric Bypass or a Duodenal Switch done, taking vitamin A, D, K, and E, is necessary due to these being fat-soluble and the malabsorptive element of the procedures. On the other hand, the previously mentioned vitamins are not necessary after a restrictive surgery, because the procedure only focuses on the reduction of the stomach size, and leaves the intestines unaffected.

It is necessary to note that there is a vast variety of formats you can buy your vitamins on:

  • Capsules
  • Gummies
  • Spray
  • Liquids
  • Injections
  • Patches
  • Powder

Find the best option for you based on your needs, to ensure adequate nutrition for a healthy post-surgery recovery.
