Hydration is vital for the body. Every single organ in the body requires water to properly function. Even your bones need water to stay healthy. Water makes up 60% of our body weight and our blood is 90% water. 

Water is vital for eliminating waste toxins, it lubricates the body; acts as a cushion for the joints: cartilage contains around 80% water. When dehydrated, the joints’ ability to absorb shock is reduced and this can lead to joint pain.

Water regulates the body temperature and is essential for processing the minerals and the nutrients you eat, as they dissolve in water. The digestive system needs water to operate. The bowel needs water to function properly. Lack of water can lead to an overly acidic stomach and bring heartburn.

Insufficient water can lead to the formation of kidney stones and other problems.

The brain also requires water to produce neurotransmitters. Dehydration can affect the ability to think and reason.

Bones are made up of water in 31% They are ⅓ water, and need water because they are constantly renewing the cells.

Drinking water has also been associated with losing weight. It may activate the metabolism and boost your energy. 

You should drink at least 2 to 3 quarts (64 to 96 ounces) of non-carbonated water/liquid per day. Sugar-free beverages such as Crystal Light are fine, but make sure they are no more than 5 calories per serving. You should never drink more than 16 ounces of caffeinated beverages per day, and coffee or tea should be sugar-free. 

Bariatric patients, due to their reduces stomach capacity need to stop drinking liquids 15 minutes before your meals, and not drink liquids with meals. This is because they flush food through the stomach. Drink water 30 to 60 minutes after meals. 

An effective method to make sure you are properly hydrated is monitoring the color of your urine. If it’s light and transparent, your body is properly hydrated. If it’s dark-colored you need to drink more water.

Symptoms of insufficient water intake: dry mouth, headaches, lack of stamina, dizziness, weakness in muscles and cramps.
